The Babysitter

Loek Dikker

Caldera Records proudly presents Loek Dikker’s score for the 1995 film “The Babysitter”.

Guy Ferland’s film is a study of Freudian projection: as a young woman (Alicia Silverstone) makes her way to the house of the Tuckers to babysit their kids, one of her ex-boyfriends, Jack, roams around town. He chances upon his former friend Mark, a boisterous and vain ladies’ man. He once had a fling with Jack’s ex and still lusts after her. Reluctantly, the two fall into conversation. Mark shares an idea: he knows their object of desire will be babysitting for the Tuckers tonight. This presents a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of her in the nude by spying on her through the windows. As Dolly and Harry Tucker leave for their party, Mark and Jack leave for the Tuckers.

The rest of the night takes place mostly in the heads of the protagonists. Much of the film consists of erotic fantasies people harbor about the young babysitter with the irresistible smile. Her name is Jennifer, but she might as well be called Lolita – another main character in a work of fiction told from the perspective of an unreliable narrator who might be imagining everything he tells us about his mad affair with the teenager.

The music was written by Dutch composer Loek Dikker, who, after having scored significant successes in his home country with early films by Paul Verhoeven and others, moved to Los Angeles. A musical concept for “The Babysitter” emerged quickly: the film revolves around several characters. At its center are the young, innocent woman; an alcoholic and dissatisfied father; and raucous boys filled to their eyeballs with testosterone. Dikker captures these elements in his music. Jennifer is accompanied by the warm orchestral sounds featuring solos by the flute and the clarinet; Harry Tucker – the frustrated middle-aged family man – is described by darker, jazzier pieces for saxophone as the solo instrument; and Jack and Mark are fittingly provided with rock music that vibrates with energy.

Loek Dikker considers “The Babysitter” one of his happy professional experiences. It is also one of his strongest works.
